    Don't be afraid to zoom.

    Close ups can give a sense of emotion that can often be missed with distance shots.

    Play with angles.  Not all close ups need to be vertical.  Sometimes a simple shift can bring a photo more life.

    Play with light, filters, colors, and other photo tools.  Cameras have so many great options.  Take a photo, and then play around with it.  It's amazing what a little editing, and subtle or bold changes can do to your Beauty Shot.
